about

The words for Marrow came out of several discussions I had with friends who had suffered abuse, both mentally and physically, as children, and how those actions had shaped who they were in their adult lives.
There is a dialogue in our culture that says that if you have suffered a terrible trauma as a child, then you are doomed to repeat those actions because that is what was modeled for you.
I wrote this song as anthem for those who are among this group to tell you that you have a choice. Your being is not the sum of the scars you carry, and your future was not set for you by the actions of broken people.
If you are the product of abuse, neglect, or abandonment: this song exists to remind you that you are not alone, and you can break the chain in the lives of your children by declaring it will never happen again.

Break the chains

lyrics

We watched our father’s father
Light the flame and melt the ore
It gave the metal density
They shaped the links until the chain had been formed
They wove it into our blood and into our bones

Until those chains were all we know

We can only surrender
To this hopeless prison
Taught to bound and to serve, what our bloodline started
Only to begin again in our children

Can we see past the chains?
Refuse to be our own captures, and enslave our very natures
Mercy is greater than our heritage, the cycle can be broken
And will crumble, and fall away (It crumbles, and falls away)

Still our bones cry out, they want to dictate our futures
but we don’t acknowledge their power here
Those were old ways, and old bodies
We choose to be made new and sing
"These chains wont bind us", (walk free, walk free)
"The past wont sentence us to suffer, in shadow"
And all the pain that woven into our spirit, it wont happen again (to you)

We swear it will never happen again
